IMASTASER ANANIA SHIRKATSI UNIVERSITY

“Imastaser Anania Shirakatsi” University in Gyumri was founded in 1991. It is licensed (N: 005, 24.08.2000) and accredited (N: 007, 03.09.2001; N: 077, 078, 07.08.2003) by the Government. Its aim is to support the reconstruction of the Earthquake Zone and raising the professional knowledge level of the inhabitants.

The basic task and the motto of the University is to prepare highly qualified specialists.
The University has a three degree educational system:

• Nursery school (Kindergarten),
• School, and
• University

This specific system provides the children with ample opportunity of choosing their future profession at an early age.

The university has two faculties:

• Philological, which offers training in the following professions:

1.   Armenian language and literature,

2.   Foreign languages:

a) English
b) French
c) German

• Economical and juridical, which offers training in the following professions:

1.   Economy and management of enterprises

2.   Law

During the first 13 years of its existence, the University had over 650 graduates. Financial aid is offered to students who are otherwise unable to pay their tuition. The teaching staff of lecturers and professors includes the best specialists in the region. The University has up-to-date technical equipment (audio, video, Internet service, computer center and specialized laboratories). Students from our University and other Higher Educational Establishments and organizations can borrow books from our rich library. The university owns a publishing house where many text-books, training materials, and scientific articles are published. Since 1998 the newspaper “Anania Shirakatsi” has been published (registered with The Ministry of Justice, N:1166, 18.12.98).. It is an effective outlet for the students’ creative talents and work.

One of the forthcoming tasks of the University is to cooperate with foreign educational and research centers to organize the exchange of students.

The “Yeritasard Shirakatsi” NGO functions within the framework of the University and the goal of the organization is to develop students’ general level of knowledge.

The University is situated in the center of Gyumri and it is the first University in the Earthquake Zone to reconstruct a four-storeyed stone building with an area of 1200 sq. m without government funding. A new area of 950 sq. m will be reconstructed this year for the fundamental (base) school of the University. Completion of the total building with an area of 2200 sq. m is being designed and constructed now.
